Albany slip beehives jug

Question:

I have a large round beehive jug and I am wondering if it is a red wing. I am assuming it is a 5 gal jug but there are no marks or numbers on it.  It is approx 19 inches tall. If it is red wing can you tell me what it is worth?

Sherri

Answer:

Sherri, normally there would be a number for the gallon-age  scratched into the tomb of the jug, however, this in not always the case.  I cannot see enough of the jug to say it is Red Wing or not, but lets just say it is.  These unmarked Albany slip beehives if they were in perfect condition, use to sell for around $200 when the economy was good.  Today you would be looking between $150 & $175.  Again for these values it must be perfect (free of any chips, flakes, cracks or hairlines.   Al Kohlman

Streamlined water jug, Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware line

Question:

I got this can you tell me what it is and how old it is.

Answer:

Your pitcher is a Streamlined water jug. In 1940 Red Wing introduced several items under the name “Streamlined” as part of the company’s rapidly expanding Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware line. Each piece in the Streamlined group had a design on each side that consisted of three raised ovals of decreasing size on top of each other. The items were a 64 oz water jug, covered ice box jug, 8″ and 9″ covered casseroles, and 2 cup and 5 cup covered teapots. The water jug had an over-the-top handle and was the only Streamlined item that did not have a cover. By June 1942 the water pitcher was the only remaining Streamlined item in the catalog and by 1944 it too had been discontinued. In later years the pitcher as listed as “Modern” rather than Streamlined. This pitcher was available several colors including yellow, blue, turquoise, orange, pink, green and cream ivory. Value for a turquoise Streamlined pitcher in excellent condition is around $50 if it is in excellent condition.

4 gallon salt glaze lazy 8 target, side stamp

Question:

Al, I have a 4 gallon salt glaze lazy 8 target crock, no chips or cracks, there are couple of very small flea bite chips on one handle, and one on the other handle, what I think make it special it is back stamped, I have never seen a small gallon crock stamped, I have seen a couple in books, but never in the eight years I have been buying, and selling crocks, I mostly seen them in 12 gallons and higher, don’t think I’ve seen them even in the 10 gallon size, my question is, how rare is it to find the stamp in the small gallon, also does where the stamp is on the crock make it more valuable (front-side-back), I am attaching pics, thank you. (Woody)

Answer:

Woody, these small Red Wing Salt glazed side stamped crocks are around and can be about as hard to find stamped as the larger ones.   Also, having the crock front stamped verses back or side stamped does assist in increasing it’s value.  Your pieces as I see it is valued in the area of $800 or so.  Al Kohlman

Answer:

Tony, the photo of your butter churn is quite small for me to be positive on it’s maker, but from what I can see, it does look like a Red Wing churn.  The lid is not Red Wing though.   An unsigned 3 gallon Red Wing lazy 8 target churn in perfect condition is between $300 & $350 without the lid.  Al Kohlman
