Desert pattern, Fancy Free line, cups saucers and bowls

Question:

Hello!  I recently came across a set of a bowl, plate and saucer with the Red Wing mark on the bottom.  Some of the edges have some small dings hut no cracks or major problems.  I then found a small teacup that seemed to match the design but had no markings on the bottom. I was wondering if this is a match and if so what might this set be worth?  Many thanks, meredith

Answer:

The cactus-themed Desert pattern is very popular with collectors and not easy to find. Desert was one of two pattern in the Fancy Free line, the other was Caprice. The Fancy Free patterns were designed by Belle Kogan, a well-known designer from New York who produced many art pottery designs for Red Wing and also a few dinnerware patterns. Fancy Free plates and bowls featured a rolled rim that was very susceptible to chipping. Pieces in mint condition are scarce. These patterns were introduced in 1952 and were made for only a brief period, thus they are rather scarce today.

The photo shows a cup and saucer from the Desert pattern as well as two bowls. No dimensions were provided for the bowls, so I cannot be sure which of the four bowl sizes are represented here.

Cup & saucer:  $30 to $40

Fruit dish 5.5 inches: $20-30

Cereal bowl 6×7 inches: $25-35

Rim Soup bowl 8 inches: $30-40

Nappy 9 inches:  $50-60

All values are for items in excellent, undamaged condition.  Damage reduces the value by 25 to 75% or more, depending on the extent and location of the damage.

Red Wing Beater jar with beater

Question:

My brother found a Red Wing Beater Jar (white with blue writing and stripes) in excellent condition…it has no chips or cracks. It also has the green wooden handle egg beater that fits on top and all gears are working.

I would like to buy it from him and would like to know a fair price to offer him.

Thanks!

Wendy

Answer:

Wendy, with the beater, that Red Wing beater jar would have a fair value of $80.  Al Kohlman

10 gallon salt glaze butter fly

Question:

I decided to buy a 10 gallon crock yesterday and found that the decoration is butterfly by checking your site. There don’t seem to be any marks on it, but it does have a pair of incised lines at the top and many on the inside. I have attached some pictures. It has one hairline crack in the bottom that extends to the side but not all the way up. Can you please tell me if this is indeed a Redwing crock and the approximate value?

I bought it because it was so pretty, but always like to know if I paid a fair, hopefully good, price. Looking forward to receiving the newsletter!

Thanks,
Tammy

Answer:

Tammy, your 10 gallon Butterfly is Red Wing.  With today’s economy and the crack, a value on your crock as I see it is between $300 & $350.   Also, you can use Lime-A-Way Gel Toilet Bowl cleaner to clean that lime off of the inside of your crock.  Put on a pair of vinyl gloves and get a green scratch pad and have at it.  It  will not hurt your crock.  Also, let the Lime-A-Way work for about 10 minutes on the lime before you begin scrubbing.  Al Kohlman

Answer:

Andrea, your Red Wing 20 lb crock was used to store butter.  Just a heart break to see that someone drilled  a hole in the bottom.  Without the hole, the value is around $800.  With the hole, $100 to $200 at best.  Your 5 gallon Red Wing is a butter churn.  Without the lid, the value is between $170 & $190.   Al Kohlman

3 gallon salt glazed butter churn

Question:

I found this crock while cleaning out my grandma’s attic. How would I tell if it is worth anything or a reproduction?
I do not see a stamp anywhere :(
Thanks
Christine

Answer:

Christine, your 3 gallon salt glazed butter churn is not a reproduction.  I am not sure if it is Red Wing by what I can see in the photo, but either way it still has value.  Value would be in the range of $200 to $300 if there is no cracks or major chips.  Al Kohlman
