Brittney Teapots glazing problem

Question:

I have a red-wing pottery teapot that needs reglazing.   The glaze on the outside becomes flaky.  Is this possible?  Also I am interested in its worth.  The lid has a yellow rose bud with 2 green leaves in the middle.  Circled by a yellow ring with a blue ring at the edge.  the pot has yellow roses with blue violets and blue aster (?) flowers painted on each side with green leaves.  It is a cute teapot.

Can you get the bleach out of the clay?  What temperature is the Red Wing pottery fired at orginally.  I probably will not keep the teapot if it is not functional but don’t want to throw it away.  Any suggestions?  Carolyn

Answer:

The name of this teapot’s pattern is Brittany. I am not aware of anybody that performs reglazing on dinnerware and am not sure if it is possible given your description of the problem.  If the glaze is flaking, I’d be concerned that a prior owner may have soaked the teapot in bleach to remove stains in the clay.  If this occurred and the bleach was not properly soaked out at the end, the clay can turn to a powdery dust.  If white powder forms on the surface, most likely it is due to bleach.  Value for a Brittany teapot in excellent condition is $50-75.

Sorry, I do not know the kiln temperature used to fire Brittany dinnerware. If bleach is the problem, the characteristic odor of bleach will likely be noticed if you sniff the teapot’s surface. Soaking the teapot in clean water will help to remove any remaining bleach but won’t reverse any damage that has already been done. Continue the soak for several days and change the water daily. When done soaking, set the teapot on a towel and allow it to air dry for several days.

Chromoline 682 and Doric Line, same shape

Question:

What can you tell me about this vase. The orange one has the part number 682?

Answer:

The orange vase is from the Chromoline series that dates from the 1960s and the glaze color on the stripe one is rust and green. The value for this shape is $150. The RWCS actually did this shape as our commemorative last year.

The blue one is from the Doric line, a year after the chromoline, value around 70.00 on that one.  thanks, steve n rose

4 Red Wing crocks 5 gallon, 10 gallon w/lid, 15 gallon and 20 gallon w/lid

Question:

I have a set of 4 Red Wing crocks (5 gallon, 10 gallon w/lid, 15 gallon and 20 gallon w/lid).  They have a red colored wing (red color), patent and company id (in blue.  The 5 gallon and 10 gallon have simple handles, but not the 15 and 20 gallon crocks.  They are in good shape with no visible cracks, except for a 6” hairline crack on the 20 gallon lid.

I am looking to sell them and was curious as to what they might be worth.

Can you estimate their value for me?

I do appreciate your input.

Sincerely,

David

Answer:

gallon lazy 8 target churn, 4 gallon lazy 8 target crock, & 6 gallon leaf crock

Question:

Al,
Any comments you can share would be appreciated. Also values. As you can see the cobalt is bold on all three. The churn is also Albany inside. The only issue with the churn/lid is a small flat chip on the base of the churn which is not visible when displayed. The 4 gallon crock is mint. The 6 gallon is just like the one in the book, there is what I believe is an irregular glaze pop on the interior base, it may be under the glaze. Mint?
As always thanks for your help.

Chuck

Answer:

Chuck, all three of your Red Wing salt glazed pieces were produced between 1867 & 1895.  Your 4 gallon lazy 8 target churn with lid would have a value between $275 & $325,  your 4 gallon lazy 8 target crock has a value between $140 & $175 & your 6 gallon leaf crock between $300 & $350.  You have three nice pieces, but at this time prices are a little soft with today’s economy.  Al Kohlman

10 gallon Red Wing Transition Crock

Question:

Hello, I have some old pottery and would like to some idea of its value, if you could help me out that would be great. I’ll send a picture, thanks John

This RW transition crock is rare (made only a short time in late 1890’s) and in perfect condition is valued between $1500–$1800.  Any damage would lower the value.

Red Wing 215 vase

Question:

Hello,

I tried to post this to your site’s Ask the Experts section, but I don’t see any way to post a new note? Is it necessary to be a member to post to that forum?

Anyhow, my grandmother had a blue Red Wing vase, about 6″ tall, with elephant heads forming the handles with their trunks. It is around 80-100 years old. She was born in 1900, and lived in Minneapolis for 12 years in the late ’20s and early ’30s.

Is there anything you can tell me about this?

Thanks in advance… Jon

Answer:

Hi Jonathan
this is the 215s, the 6″ vase.  there is a 10″ one as well.  they are from the early 1930’s.  Most sell for around 80.00 or so.  thanks, steve n rose
