20 lb butter crock

Question:
I have a 20 lb. butter crock. It has the 4" wing and the top has a large ridge about 3/4" and just below that a smaller ridge about 1/4".

There are no cracks…one very tiny chip on the outside top edge about 1/4".

On the outside body of the crock there are 2 areas that are rough….like they were smudged when they were being made. It is not a chip or chunk out. Both areas are about 1 1/4 " in length. I don’t have a picture right now….can you give me any idea of value. I would guess with the chip even though it is little and the damage areas the value is lower. Thanks Ruth M.

Answer:
Ruth, without seeing a photo of your Red Wing 20lb butter crock I would put the value between $650 & $750. Al Kohlman

Home Packing Preserving the Red Wing Way

Question:
I came across a 32 page book that I have never seen and was wondering if you could help me. The size is 8 3/4 X 6inches, on the cover it says Home Packing Preserving The Red Wing Way (on the bottom ) Meats, Eggs, Vegetbles, Fruits. There is Red Wings all the way around the cover. It is in very good condition except on the inside cover it\’s covered with writing and also the title page has some writing. Could you tell me when it was printed and the approxamite value? Thanks John W.

Answer:
John, I have no date on the Home Packing Preserving The Red Wing Way booklet as I have never seen a publishing date. My best guess would be in the 1920’s,but again a guess. This booklet in mint condition is valued around $50. Al Kohlman

Value of 29 gallon pot

Question:
What is the current value of a 20 gallon red wing pot (no lid) is good condition (dated 1915)? Thanks John

Answer:
John, without seeing a photo it is hard to give a value. Does the crock have a 6 inch wing or a 4 inch wing? Are the markings dark, light clear or smeary. is every thing balanced on the crock. All these items determine the price. Without seeing your crock it can be in a range from $75 to $200. Any damage would also reduce the price. Al Kohlman

RW Churn Lids

Question:
Hi, Do Red Wing churn lids have the churn size embossed on them? Example: 5&6
Thanks Bill

Answer:
Bill, not all the Red Wing churn lids will have the size embossed on them. A good rule of practice when looking for a churn lid is to measure the inside opening of your churn (where the lid would fit). Churn openings vary and many times the lid which may be marked as the correct size for your churn, will not always fit. Al Kohlman

Butterfly Ohio Crock

Question: {mosimage}
Could you please verify that this is a Red Wing piece and what the approximate value is. Thank you, Bonnie

Answer:
Bonnie, your 6 gallon crock is not Red wing. It looks to be an Ohio piece of Stoneware. The Butterfly (or some call it a flower) is nicely done. I would place a value of $300 to $450 on your piece. Al Kohlman

Brushware Elk Crock

Question:
I have a brushware elk "crock" number 107 as seen in the Moran book. It’s in primo condition and is just as described in the Moran book. I wonder where we might find someone interested in purchasing it – thanks – Elizabeth

Answer:
Ebay would be a source for selling the item or try your local auction house. If it is not ink stamped on the bottom, it will hurt the value. Robinson Ramsbottom also produced the same sand jar, in simular glazes as Red Wing. Steve N Rose

Crock Thefts in Rochester

Question: {mosimage}
This is more of an ALERT: Many crock thefts took place last fall in Rochester, MN. My 30 gallon was stolen right off my front porch, while the front light was on…I saw the thieves put it into their car but wasn\’t fast enough to follow them. Anyway, please be aware of the thefts and screen your sellers. A picture of mine is attached. It has a distinguishing flaw on the front. Please email me if you should have any information about it (or other thefts from Rochester).
– Thank you! – Cheryl

Answer:
Cheryl, sorry to hear about your loss. Crocks of this size and value can be very temping for someone to take either for quick sale or there own personal use. Thank you for making every one aware of what can happen. Hopefully one of our readers or collectors may have seen your beautiful piece and get back to you.
– Good luck. Al Kohlman
