Question:
I have a crock that I just purchased which it is a Eight Gallon with the ski oval and a six inch wing in excellent condition no bail handles. Can you tell me the year it was produced and also what the meaning is of the ski oval and price it might be worth. Also if they have a ski oval are the more valuable than others. Thanks. Nicole
Answer: Nicole, the ski oval was the first oval used by the Red Wing Stoneware Company and the most desired by collectors. Pieces that have the ski oval were produced between 1895 & 1912. This oval being more desired than the other ovals of course would raise the value somewhat on these pieces. Value is a combination of how well stamped, how dark and clear the stamps and how even and balanced the decorations. So when you look at the crock, does it just scream at you or is it just a jar with some color on it. Put everything together and when they scream, the value will scream as well. A good 8 gallon Red Wing crock with 6 inch wing and ski oval that screams, can fetch $175 to $200. An ordinary Red Wing 8 gallon crock $100 to $125. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
