Question:
To the untrained eye; how do you determine whether an advertising jug is Red Wing? Since it has no red wing stamp what are the identifiable marks? Thanks much for your expertise! Liz
Answer: Liz, this is a tough question to answer as there are quite a few things one must look for. Ex: what state is on the jug (some states Red Wing did not produce items for). How the back of the handle is applied at it’s base. Red Wing handles were applied at the base by the potters putting both thumbs together and while applying pressure, slid them apart. Also, Red Wing advertising will have a round or square boarder around the advertising that is a straight line and not ornate. These are a few of the things you look for. It takes time, questions and research and over time, you will feel comfortable with what is Red Wing Advertising and what is not. Al Kohlman
