Question:
I recently purchased a Red Wing Soup Tureene at an auction. It has an off white glaze. The piece comes complete with the ladle, bottom plate and tureene. Any help will be appreciated.
Answer:
Sorry but I cannot determine the identity of your tureen without more details or preferably a photo. Red Wing did not make many true soup tureens. People sometimes mistake other pieces such a casseroles for a tureen.
Two white soup tureens made by Red Wing come to mind. Town & Country dinnerware was made for ten years, but was available in white for only a brief period in the late 1940s. This pattern includes a soup tureen and ladle but there was no underplate made specifically to go with the tureen. A Town & Country tureen has a round shape and smooth surface and is not marked with the Red Wing name. This would be a rare and valuable piece.
Tweed Tex is an all-white pattern in the Anniversary shape. A Tweed Tex soup tureen was produced but there was no ladle or underplate. The bowl portion of the tureen had a textured surface "basketweave" surface and was marked RED WING USA on the bottom. The cover had a handle in the shape of a curlique that resembles the top of a soft-serve ice cream cone. A Tweed Tex soup tureen is difficult to find and has some value, but would be worth much less than a white Town & Country Tureen.
Or your piece could be something else entirely different. Without more details or a photo I cannot be sure.
