NEW 2009 Convention Activities
The Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) announces the formation of the Pottery Welcome group. Several Red Wing organizations have come together to improve the RWCS Annual Convention for both members and the general public. The 2009 Convention will be July 9-11 and, in the past, has brought over 2,000 RWCS members to Red Wing each summer.

For the past 30 years, local businesses, organizations, and community members have supported the RWCS Annual Convention through donations to the Red Wing Chamber Potter’s Picnic and door prizes for the RWCS Convention Banquet. In addition, volunteers from the Visitor and Convention Bureau have staffed the info table at the high school and distributed welcome signs throughout the city.

The new Pottery Welcome Group includes representatives from the Red Wing Visitor and Convention Bureau, Red Wing Area Chamber, Downtown Mainstreet, City of Red Wing, RWCS Foundation, RWCS, Goodhue County Historical Society, and several other community leaders and RWCS members. The group has three tasks; to revitalize the Friday night social event into a new event open to both members and the public, send a welcome message to all attendees and visitors on behalf of the local businesses, and to contact Red Wing businesses and organizations for donations and support.

The Friday night social event will “Rock around the Crock” with a 50s sock hop event. The July 10 event will be open to both RWCS members and the public. This free concert will feature great music from the 50s, amazing food, and exciting activities.

In addition to “Rocking around the Crock”, members and the public are encouraged to participate in the RWCS first Crock Hunt! The Crock Hunt is a scavenger hunt of sorts within local businesses to win prizes at the Crock Hop. Details will be available in the Convention Supplement inserted in the Red Wing Republican Eagle July, 8th.

“The RWCS appreciates the donations that Red Wing businesses have given to the Convention each year. I feel that the Pottery Welcome Group efforts will make Red Wing residents and businesses feel a part of the RWCS Annual Convention as much as our members feel a part of our city. One of my goals for the Convention is to bring the Red Wing Collectors Society members and the public together for a night of fun.” said Stacy Wegner, Executive Director of the Red Wing Collectors Society.

“The creation of these new events will show the RWCS Pottery Convention attendees how much the entire Red Wing community appreciates their annual visit and will help the community learn more about the RWCS,” said Marie Mikel, Red Wing Area Chamber President.

The Red Wing Collectors Society was founded in 1977 and has more then 5,000 members nationwide that collect the Red Wing Potteries stoneware, dinnerware, and art pottery. The first Convention was held at the Goodhue County Historical Society in 1977 and is currently held at the Red Wing High School. The Annual Convention is open to all members with Saturday events including show and sale and display are open to the public. 2009 Convention Keynote: Cathy Wurzer
RED WING, MINN – Minnesota Public Radio talk show host Cathy Wurzer has accepted invitation from the Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) to speak at its 2009 Convention scheduled for July 9-11 in Red Wing, Minn.

One of Minnesota's premiere journalists with an extensive background in public and commercial broadcasting, Wurzer is the host of Minnesota Public Radio’s "Morning Edition". She’s also the co-host of "Almanac" – a weekly public affairs program produced byTwin Cities Public Television for Minnesota's statewide public television network.

Wurzer authored the regional best seller Tales of the Road – Highway 61 in 2008 and hosted the public television documentary by the same name that premiered earlier this spring. The book, which features historical sites along Highway 61, includes a chapter about Red Wing Pottery and the potters themselves.

“We’re excited that Cathy will be speaking at our convention,” said Stacy Wegner, RWCS executive director. “Our members and the Goodhue County Historical Society provided a lot of help when she was researching for the book, so she’ll discuss some of the things she learned about the Potteries.”

Wurzer’s presentation will take place at 10:30 a.m. July 9 in the Hove Auditorium at Red Wing High School, 2451 Eagle Ridge Dr. in Red Wing.

The national RWCS Convention has been held every July since 1977 in Red Wing, Minn. This year’s Convention, July 9-11, will attract thousands of collectors to Red Wing for a week of educational meetings, auctions, buying, selling and fun for the whole family. While there’s usually a fee to attend all Convention activities, Wurzer’s keynote presentation will be open free to the public this year.

RED WING, MN – The Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) has announced it will hold their annual Red Wing Pottery Road Show this year at the Red Wing Pottery Museum.

Once again, The RWCS business office, RWCS Foundation/Red Wing Pottery Museum, Cannon Valley Red Wing Collectors Club (CVRWCC) and the businesses of the historic Pottery Place are excited to announce that the Red Wing Pottery Road Show will be Saturday, May 16th, from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“We saw such a great turnout last year that we felt that this should be an annual event. It is a great way for everyone to learn about the piece they own and more about Red Wing, Minnesota’s rich pottery history. In addition we hope that by sharing our passion for Red Wing others will consider joining our organization,” said Stacy Wegner, executive director.

Everyone is invited to bring their Red Wing Stoneware, Dinnerware or Art Pottery to the historic Pottery Place during the Red Wing Pottery Road Show to find out its value, learn about its history and have questions answered. If your piece is too big, or you’re concerned about transporting bring photos and details. No piece too small or too large. If it’s Red Wing, one of our many experts will be on hand to assist you.

This year we once again have a powerhouse of pottery experts to help the public learn about their pieces including: Larry Peterson, Dave Hallstrom, and Mike Anderson for Stoneware; Larry Roschen, Todd Hintz, and Ivy Loughborough for Dinnerware; Mary Bang, Bonnie Myers, and Nick Marson for Art Pottery. Each of these experts has more then 25 years of Red Wing Pottery experience: collecting, buying, selling, researching, and presenting. Participants are sure to go away with all their questions answered about their Red Wing.

In addition, members of the RWCS will be available for tours of the museum and Pottery Place complex, answer questions, and share their passion for Red Wing Pottery. Plus, all visitors to the event are encouraged to register to win door prizes including Collectors Starter Kit, set of Red Wing Stoneware books, by Larry Peterson, and several commemoratives. These prizes are sure to get a new collector started or enhance an existing collection.

“This event gives us the opportunity to show off the Red Wing Pottery museum to the community and share the exciting plans for the museum’s future expansion” adds Diane Hallstrom, RWCS Foundation Board Member.

Once again this year Keith Klindworth, repair specialist, will be available to share his repair knowledge and expertise. “I had the opportunity to see so many great examples of Red Wing that were in need of a little TLC last year. I felt it was important to be a part of this event again, so these pieces can share their beauty with the world again,’ said Klindworth.

Red Wing Collectors Society Joins IAntiqueOnline.com

RWCS launches new online presence with IAntiqueOnline.com
Red Wing, Minn.: The Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS), the largest collecting club dedicated to the preservation of Red Wing and other American pottery, launched a new group page on IAntiqueOnline.com.

IAntiqueOnline.com is a website community for people who buy, sell or collect antiques, collectibles and art. Like other online communities, membership is free and open to anyone. Users have the ability to post pictures, join groups and create discussion topics.

This website community is just one of the many ways the RWCS is increasing its internet presence in 2009. Other online communities that the Society has become affiliated with include Facebook and Wikipedia. The RWCS recognizes the benefits of the internet to help increase awareness of the organization, Red Wing Potteries history and membership benefits. In addition, this type of presence gives RWCS members and Red Wing collectors a chance to share their passion with others no matter their level of collecting interest.
